eReader Content Formats

About Content Formats

All eBooks are published in one or more Content Formats (see Software Formats in eReader Support for more details) but not necessarily in every format. Thus it can be important when choosing an eReader to be aware of what format(s) the device supports and how widely available titles are in these available options.

The following lists the most widely adopted Content Formats and indicates which devices support each format.

PDF Readers

PDF:

  • Amazon Kindle (All models)
  • Sony Reader (All models)
  • Barnes & Noble Nook (All models)
  • The Skiff
  • BeBook (All models)
  • Plastic Logic Que
  • Spring Design Alex

Note: PDF support may be limited due to device display capabilities. For example, most readers will not support Flash/Video content.

ePUB Readers

The Mobipocket format/reader is also widely used on mobile phones, PCs and laptops.

 

LIT Readers

LIT:

  • No known eInk Readers
  • Microsoft Mobile devices

The LIT format is also widely used on PC and laptop desktops.
